Our Greener Choices

Caring for the environment is something that sits close to our hearts, just as it does for many of the families we walk alongside. When someone dies, it’s natural to want their farewell to reflect their values and the love they shared including kindness toward the world they leave behind. There are many gentle, thoughtful ways to create a funeral that is more environmentally friendly, and we are here to guide you with compassion at every stage.

No Embalming

Embalming involves chemicals that some feel may not be kind to the environment.

We do not embalm as standard. Instead, we care for your loved one with tenderness gently washing and preparing them so they can rest naturally and peacefully. If embalming is preferred or becomes necessary, we can offer this option and will always explain everything with sensitivity, seeking your written consent. This delicate work is carried out by a trusted, local embalmer who shares our commitment to dignity and respect.

Coffin Choices

Choosing a coffin can be an emotional moment, and we are here to support you with warmth and understanding. We offer a thoughtful range of natural, sustainable options including willow, wool and local bespoke handmade caskets.

You may also choose a shroud instead of a coffin. Among our wooden options, pine is the most sustainable.

We will guide you gently through each option, helping you make choices that feel right for your loved one and for the environment.

Coffin Flowers

Flowers often bring comfort, and there are many ways to honour your loved one while caring for the planet. Our florists can create beautiful arrangements using seasonal flowers and foam‑free or wire‑based designs.

A planted eco‑wreath is a particularly meaningful choice it continues to bloom after the ceremony, offering a living tribute.

Locally grown flowers help reduce environmental impact and support local growers.

We will always talk with you about what to do with flowers after the funeral, or whether you’d prefer charitable donations instead while recognising how much comfort flowers can bring.

Natural Burial

For those seeking a peaceful, nature‑focused resting place, we work closely with Wattlewood a registered Natural burial ground in South Australia. This calming space offers a gentle alternative to traditional cemeteries. Instead of headstones, the landscape itself becomes a living memorial quiet, natural, and deeply comforting.

Natural burials usually require biodegradable coffins, natural clothing, and no embalming. Many families find solace in knowing they can return to a serene natural setting whenever they wish.

If you prefer cremation, we can arrange for ashes to be buried in the natural burial site. Natural funerals can also take place on private land or at home, where appropriate.

Small Farewell Gathering

A smaller gathering can help reduce travel and environmental impact, while still offering a meaningful, intimate space for remembrance.

Headstones

If you choose a traditional burial or wish to inter ashes, you may decide not to have a headstone or plaque. Planting a tree in memory can be a beautiful, life‑affirming alternative. We offer a dedicated memorial pathway where family and friends can contribute to tree planting in honour of your loved one.

Green Products for Ashes

For cremations, we offer a range of urns made from natural, biodegradable materials. These can be kept at home or buried.

A Caring Conclusion

While cremation remains the most common choice in Australia, natural burial is currently the greenest option available.
